Literacy Instruction at LEARN
LEARN Charter Schools strongly believe in differentiated instruction for all students because no purchased curricula can meet the needs of all children. For this reason, LEARN has adopted a balanced approach to literacy instruction which allows instructors to effectively focus on the academic needs of each student by providing targeted, comprehensive and meaningful instruction. Instructors develop lessons that meet the individual, unique academic needs of students and grade level standards.
LEARN believes that increasing reading achievement is crucial to academic success. LEARN’s core beliefs which drives the literacy instruction provided to students are the following:
- Literacy development and instruction must be individualized; there is no single panacea that works for everyone
- Ongoing, daily assessment informs instruction and provides individual accommodations
- Instruction and curricula materials must be designed to empower students to read and write at a proficient level
- Instruction must focus on specific skills and strategies that develop a proficient reader
- Students must be provided ample time actively engaged in reading and writing
- Students need an environment that encourages active participation and discussion
LEARN believes that increasing reading achievement is crucial to students’ academic success. Therefore, LEARN has dedicated 3.5 hours a day to literacy instruction so that students have various opportunities to actively engage in the practice of reading and writing.
