Student Learning: Core Beliefs

Although many theories exist about how a person learns new information, LEARN believes that there are some core beliefs that serves as a foundation for LEARN’s instructional practices.

All students are naturally curious and have the capacity and desire to excel academically
 
LEARN adopts a student-centered instructional model to meet the various academic and social needs of students. 
Students rise to the level of communicated expectations
LEARN has high expectations for student academic growth and develops learning goals for every student to ensure sufficient progress.
Students learn best in a safe and nurturing environment that supports thinking.
LEARN instructors develop a structured classroom community that respects an individual’s right to learn in a safe and nurturing environment that supports thinking.  LEARN will create an environment in which students become excited and motivated about what is taught.
Different students learn concepts and skills in different ways
LEARN instructors utilize strategies that meet individual academic needs.  For example, Reading Workshop allows for instruction to be individualized and presented in a variety of ways because no approach meets every student’s needs. 
Students can actively construct their own thinking by building prior knowledge when connections are made to the world, other text, or prior knowledge
LEARN will expose our students to ideas that broaden their experience through content rich instruction, manipulating rich literature and community learning opportunities.
 Ongoing feedback to students is critical to student learning and progress
 Assessment drives instruction and intensified instruction is based on the needs of students.  Students will become a part of the assessment process in order to be well-informed of their own strengths and weaknesses. 
Students must see learning as meaningful and see that learning has a purpose in their lives without such relevancy, motivation decreases
LEARN will expose students to ideas and concepts that broaden their experiences in a content rich learning environment.
