NORTH CHICAGO – U.S. Senators Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) along with Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL-10) today visited Naval Station Great Lakes to discuss the future of the station with Base Commander CAPT Randy Lynch and other leaders. Sen. Kirk is Ranking Member on the Milcon/VA Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees funding for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. Last week, Sen. Today, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) announced their support for the establishment of the LEARN Public Charter School in North Chicago on the edge of Great Lakes Naval Station. The Senators congratulated the Navy, the LEARN Charter School Network, the Illinois State Board of Education and the community of North Chicago for their efforts in working together to establish the elementary charter school, which is scheduled to open on September 4, 2012 in North Chicago School District 187.

Come fall, hundreds of kids in North Chicago School District 187 — one of the worst-performing districts in the state — will have a terrific chance at a better education. They owe that opportunity to Illinois schools Superintendent Christopher Koch. On Thursday, Koch swept aside a decision by local school board members and said, yes, North Chicago will welcome a new school operated by LEARN, one of the best charter school outfits in the state.

The state has overturned a recent North Chicago School Board vote against the establishment of a new charter school in the district. An order issued Thursday by state schools Superintendent Christopher Koch said District 187 “is likely to lose millions” in federal assistance unless it takes immediate action to attract and retain military families. The state, which can overrule district decisions concerning any aspect of operations under an intergovernmental agreement, contends a charter located on the nearby Navy base will bring back students from military families who have left in droves...

In November 2010, the Illinois State Board of Education took virtual control of one of the worst school districts in the state, North Chicago School District 187. One of the smart ways state officials planned to boost academic performance: Invite a top charter operator, LEARN Charter School Networks, to build an elementary school at a former Naval Station Great Lakes training facility.
