LEARN 6 Recognized as Exemplary School

CHICAGO, IL – On October 31, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released summative designations for every school in the state of Illinois. The designations provide a public benchmark of each school’s progress toward the goal of preparing all students for success in college and career. Illinois has four summative designations: Exemplary School, Commendable School, Underperforming School, and Lowest-Performing School, and LEARN 6 North Chicago | Great Lakes received Exemplary status. LEARN 6 was the only school in North Chicago to receive a designation of Exemplary, the highest possible rating.

Multiple measures of school performance and growth determine a school’s designation. In the state of Illinois, only 373 out of 3,707 schools received Exemplary status, meaning they performed in the top 10 percent of schools statewide with no underperforming student groups for 2018.

“I know how hard my teachers work to raise the bar on academic achievement at LEARN 6,” said Principal Kelly Tyson. “I’m honored to work alongside such a dedicated staff who go above and beyond to ensure that our students receive the best education possible.”

Out of the 373 schools with an Exemplary designation, LEARN 6 was one of four open enrollment schools serving low-income, ethnically diverse students. LEARN 6 serves a population of students that is 62.6% low-income and 89.7% non-white. Additionally, LEARN 6 is one of two charter schools in the entire state that received the top designation; Southland College Prep, a high school charter located in Richton Park, IL, was also named an Exemplary School.

This designation affirms the power in LEARN’s mission and core values. The hard work and high expectations of educators and families of the LEARN 6 community ensures students are mastering challenging content. LEARN 6 scholars outperformed both the state and district in ELA and math proficiency. They also outranked the state and district for the mean ELA and math growth percentile.

“We are so proud of the students, staff and leadership of LEARN 6,” said Gregory White, President and CEO of LEARN. “We recognize that achieving the Exemplary designation is an impressive accomplishment. It is a very high bar, and we are thrilled to be recognized as a top performing school in the state of Illinois.”
